LYRICS AND SONGS

BAYFOLK was set up in 1989, to deliver a project commissioned by South Glamorgan County Council, which involved researching, then documenting
in song, aspects of the recent, anecdotal social history of Cardiff Bay, and producing a schedule of accompanying performances via the medium of music, song, dance and theatre. A series of projects ensued involving schools, theatre and community groups, bands and musicians. Some of the side -projects such as WINTERVAL (literally a winter festival of music song and dance designed to fill the January, post-festive void) and HERITAGE WEEKEND a dramatic, musical re-creation of Tiger Bays yesteryears) became
keenly-anticipated dates on the
Capitals annual events calendar.
Off-shoot product such as “BAYWINDOWS” “OLD CARDIFF WINDS”(songbook) and the eponymous “BAYFOLK” C.D. have been sold around the world, The songs from them are widely sung in schools, folk clubs and festivals throughout Wales, often accepted now as part of local
Folklore.
BAYFOLK eventually evolved with a far broader remit than Cardiff-themed songs and projects, and became the vehicle for many diverse song-based projects, including “BOTH THE DAYS” a song-cycle based around the
arc of celebrity life and death
Of Irish poet, writer and cause-celebre, BRENDAN BEHAN.

BAYFOLK now fosters the many collaborative arts projects evolved by Mike Johnson and associates, a multi-talented collective of high-calibre musicians, artistes and arts practitioners.
BAYFOLK is the conduit which discusses, negotiates, evolves, manages and delivers the project-commissioning and collaborative aspects of the prolific artistic output from Mike and his collaborative partners.
